Here are some pics from up near Stratford TX... It is really terrible. Here are some pictures of corn that I took last week:
Field where they abandoned half of it to concentrate the water on just saving a part of a circle.
Circle under pivot with thin soil with little water holding capacity. The band of green on the horizon is apparently from a leak on a hose near the center.
Circle with tillage marks from the previous winter visible due to uneven water penetration. The circle is being baled - even though it has barely tasseled...
This was especially striking to come home to - considering I took the kids on a road trip to Washington DC & Iowa for the past couple of weeks and everything was so green and lush over much of the USA.
We've been over 100 most days for the last several weeks with the local weather equipment getting hitting a high of 114 a few days ago.
Some of the corn has already been chopped for silage to give water for the rest of the acres. I've heard of silage yields of 4-7 tons/acre where 28-32 is more expected...
