6 volt battery question

My neighbor is having problems with his tractor. It is a '50 McCormick Farmall Cub, 6 volt
system. The problem started as the battery wouldn't charge. He isn't sure how to connect the
battery, positive cable to negative battery, or positive to positive, and has switched back and
forth a few times. Someone told him neg to pos on old 6 volt (positive earth). I really don't
know. Also, battery only shows 4.5 volts with the tractor off. The battery charger leads get
hot and only get the voltage to 4.85 volts. Is it possible the generator was damaged? Can you help? Thanks in advance, Eric Weber
