That is a problem that GM is very aware of. The 1999,2000 and 2001 pickups all had fuel gauge problems develop. To replace you drop the tank and put in a whole new assembly which is cost prohibitive. My 2001 has its guage jump all over,shows empty when full,jumps around,but usually half tank on down it will show somewhat accurately. I have found if I leave the key to on while filling that it seems to work more accurately. It has nothing to do with ground wire,this is a GM design flaw that is very costly to remedy.
