my book says to line up the single punch mark on the crank gear with the double punch mark on the cam gear.remove the magneto and line up the single punch mark on the cam rear with the double mark on the magneto gear.
for checking valve timing without removing timing gear cover,with tappets adjusted to normal operating gap,number one exhaust valve should be just closed when the flywheel mark E is vivible at the inspection port in the right side of clutch housing
