I would install them both pointing toward the oil. A seal facing the dirt is more likely to collect and hold the dirt. Also, I don't think the MFR. would have spec'd an oil seal for that purpose. For dirt you want what they call an 'exclusion' seal, a seal with a large lip that either rotates with the shaft, or can be pressed into a housing so the shaft rotates within it. If the seal has a spring on it, the dirt will eventually rust it off of there anyway. With the flat side of the seal against the dirt, it will trap a minimum of dirt, and protect the inner seal at the same time. There should be either scrapers or a vine knife, make sure these are in adjustment, as they help keep the dirt away from the seal. Every little bit helps.
