Rich's peacock made me think a little... There are still carrier pigeon clubs in just about every area here and pigeons in general aren't as overpopulated and nasty as I remember them..... Anyway, you always have visitors show up.... I came home one day and had one laying by the mailbox looking pretty used up... Got the phone number from a ring on it's leg and called the owner who was about as far north in germany as you can get without rubber boots (500 miles from us).... Guy asked the ID# on the other tag and if there was any obvious injuries (none)... Asked me to put it in a cage or box and feed/water her a couple days. On the 3rd day, leave the cage open a half hour or so.... 5 days later, she flew up on the barn roof ridge, looked around to get her bearings and took off in a straighter direction to home than someone with a compass... Guy said she and a few others had been turned loose in southern italy a few days before (they'll send crates between clubs on trains or whatever to turn loose and race home.... I've ran across a couple dead ones over the years and the folks are always great when you call them to let them know.... Russian guy across the street has these pigeons that'll do backflips while flying... just fascinates the heck outta me.......
