Dave, there was a fellow named Witold Kasper that designed the triple slotted flaps for the Boeing 727. He had seen some of those pigeons and wondered if he could make an airplane do that. So he tinkered with models and finally got an airplane that would tumble. He built a full scale glider and used to fly it in airshows around here. That was before my time, so I never saw it, but I've seen articles about it. I've also not been able to find a video of it. The airplane is a Bekas BKB-1A, and he reportedly developed a powered version called "Mighty Mouse".
