if used correctly it won't hurt an engine, don't use it with glow poppers or other heater type starting adds nor on a lot of the fancy electronic injection systems, some of the older design engines were simply hard to start cold, ether was used to help with that instead of burning up starters, batteries and charging systems, not to mention the delay time from an engine that wouldn't start ,will never forget the so called fleet manager the company hired first little presentation, had a can of ether and a gallon of silicate free anti-freeze on the table, explained that if your equipment need starting fluid it needed to be tuned up and that the silicate anti-freeze was the only suitable product for the trucks, little did he know the old fellow we work for had made a couple million off of diesel engines in his equipment that were started with ether and all the tune ups he wanted to do wouldn't solve that, it was the nature of the beast, as for the anti-freeze another sales pitch from a dealer, older mechanic was changing a water pump for the second time on a cummins in a crane when he was given the additive to put in the cooling system to help with premature seal failure, he got to reading the label it was a silicate additive, he did talk trash about changing anti-freeze types as this wasn't the first time he had replaced a pump with low hours on it,always did amaze me how some of the fast talking shingle toter's could get a position that they weren't qualified to fill
