GBS has explained it the way I learned it. An engine is a device to power a machine to do a job. whatever starts the engine gets the machine to start doing the job. Sometimes a complete inspection and overhaul can't be justified if a shot of evil does the trick- a $2 can will start something? 100? 200 times? I know an old Italian contractor that said 'what am I suppose to do? Pay a man -or 2, 20 or 30 bucks an hour to stand there and analize the weather on a cold winter morning? My IH656 had a factory- rack? that held 2 cans of ether. I couldn't use it because the nozzles must have changed over the years, or that was to use IHC propietory cans, don't know, but it needed it alot, and the poor Standard I have now will never start cold in a million years without it, some say it is the design of the heads and preheats, which there was a variety. If it was so bad for diesels- or any engine, the industry would stop its production or atleast put a warning label on all engines... haven't seen that yet, and ether's been around over 150 years???

In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
