My neighbor had a 17HP briggs in a 52” rider that would do that. Run fine one minute, stumble and die, run fine and start all over. He had it in the shop three or four times and they could never get it fixed. He was ready to burn it to the ground and went and bought a new one. It was a good solid mower and only a few years old. So I bought it for a song thing figuring worst case I would put a spare motor in it.
Turned out the only thing wrong with it was the little plastic part on the end of the solenoid was loose. It would pop up and intermittently shut off gas to the carb. Does your solenoid have a plastic tip? Is it loose? The purpose of it is to shut off the gas so a leaking float valve does not fill the engine with gas. In my case I opted for a $3 manual on/off vale in the fuel line vs. a $58 solenoid. I replaced the solenoid with a bolt from an older carb.
