: How far do most of you go in your rebuilds/restoration? I am particularly interested about how many dive into the transmission? Does a true rebuilds/restoration project include doing the trannie? How difficult is a trannie to do? Jim, I have rebuilt several tractors but don't know if I am an expert yet. As for the transmissions I generally drain the oil/water/sludge, rinse with kerosene paying particular attention for (stray) metal. If I don't find a bunch of metal, I refill with gear dope after replacing leaky seals (final drives, pto, belt pulley, etc.) If it shifts and drives all right I consider it done. I rebuilt the transmission on my JD MC, and with a manual it was not too difficult. Biggest thing is you have to have micrometers and dial indicators to set backlash on gears. Hope this helps!
