Mark, Leroy had the same idea I do, go between the rows. I tried all sorts of crazy things on the trees I grow going overtop. Found it was just plain easier to go between the rows. All my rows are set at 12 feet, all my equip is sized accordingly. Mower, cultivator, sprayer.
I have seen some tree planting set up square, 8x8 or 10x10. Run the field E-W, then N-S to get the weeds between rows.
I know vegetables run a lot narrower, meaning not a lot of HP required. We plant with either the laser or transist. I took out a few trees where two rows both drifted "narrow" by a foot. Meaning I wasn't paying attention when I was driving!!
