The biggest gripe about the N series around here is they were mis-sold and possibly at times intentionally mis-sold. They could go toe to toe in acres plowed per hour against a Farmall M and perhaps other tillage/ planting operations. But they certainly lagged in other respects and in muddy harvest conditions where weight transfer was not possible or even detrimental they were a liability. Of course farmers were comparatively uninformed versus today on these aspects of a tractor and letting the farmer figure out the hard way the differences between tractors left hard feelings. My grandfather was "pitched" a 9N while he was looking for tractors in 1941. He could readily see that the 9N lacked the profile he wanted for cultivating crops and also knew to determine what he needed for belt or PTO hp so he did not get caught off guard. But there were those farmers that were caught up in the plowing/ tillage aspect they never considered their other needs till after the purchase. After enduring a tough year or two of gutting out picking corn or spreading manure where the M might shine prompted many to trade their N's off and maybe the more affluent just hung on to them and bought an additional tractor. Nobody ever said they were a failure in terms of sales numbers but to be fair a large volume were sold for quite a number of not-true farm operations giving rise to the notion of an utility tractor as we know it today.
