Yes, the competitive tractors are no longer stock, but they aren"t necessarily impossible to achieve either. A tractor with "stock" levels of horsepower can do well, but it needs to be running ~1000 lbs lighter than the way "granddad" had the tractor setup in the field. For example a stock Case DC will probably run out of power in the 5500 lb class, but is still a contender at 4500 lbs. Similarly a stock Farmall H will come up short in 4500 lbs, but will do very well down in 3500 lbs.
I don"t remember they exact numbers, but a couple of years ago they were getting 300+ hooks per night (and adding more each year) which makes for a long night for the volunteer track crew. Now consider than that the event runs pulls for 4 consecutive nights, which means over 1000 trips down the track. Something needed to be done to start trending the numbers back down. Since the volunteers who organize the pull are the ones who have the stronger tractors, the decision was made to beef up the sled and make it harder to pull.
Unfortunately the losers are the ones who have a truly stock tractor. If they choose, they too can join the club and have a say in how things are run for next year.
