I think the problem was in the fact that the guy offered $275 over the phone- I've never offered anything over the phone, I just make sure they're "negotiable", then go see it and go from there.
If you've made an offer over the phone, the proper etiquette when you go see it is to decide if you want it at $275 or not, based on condition. Don't be trying to low-ball even further.
But I agree that maybe Trucker was a little too short-fused about it. I'd have said, "Well, you offered $275- either take it at that price, or we'll both keep looking."
