As far as "outside wood boilers " the State of NY requires that they are all Gasifiers, and meat all EPA standards. I have installed severeral Pro Fab 200s and 400s and Econoburn Units. The European units burn very hot for short times to "load the storage tanks" and then the distribution system depleets the hot water from the tanks to heat your home. You need to have a very regimented time schedual to tend the fire in them or you will be rekindling the fire very often. These systems use very little wood, but do not accomidate the schedule of a working man. Wood Gassers will use about a 1/3 less wood, than a conventional OWB but it has to be well seasoned wood, because the burn cycles are intermitent, and wet wood will not reignite when heat is called for. If I were you I would install a Inside Gasification Boiler, Much cheaper, (no steel building) in your garage and plumb it into your system. There are no restrictions on emissions in this senario,(here in NYS). And you won't be having to walk outdoors to the wood shead to maintain it. I just installed a new Bugarus boiler in a home and took out an older Royall comby Wood/Coal add on. Put it in my 1152sq ft. attached shop and tied it to my 2600 sq ft. Ranch home 1800 sq ft of cellar, rest over crawl space, all with radient floor heat. Have run a few test runs and don't expect to use any oil,or wood pellets as like last year. I heating with a Harmam P61 Pellet stove, in cellar and a central "air tight" fireplace in the living room, last year without a drop of oil, but looking forward to having a nice warm shop to work in this winter, all heated by wood.
