The big tanks are the money makers that keep the boiler from having to run so much. Regardless of the boiler type, the bigger and better insulated the tanks are, the less the boiler will need to run. Wehave an oil boiler now without the buffer tanks but are gathering esyimates and will be switching to a pellet system in the next couple weeks. The size of our house and there being only the two of us calls for an 800 liter tank, but some places use between 500 and 10,000 liters... drinking/shower water is heated either in a seperate tank with the heat exchanger tubes fed by the bigger tank that also feeds the heat radiators or just a seperate internal tank in the big one (50+/- gallons).. You can also use solar in conjunction with the boiler. Solar tubes run thru the big tank to heat the water, the boiler operates based on the temp in the big tank so the warmer the sun makes the water the less the boiler has to run....
