Need Farmall "A" Electrics help

My father-in-law has a Farmall Super "A" with an inop charging system. It has what looks like a voltage regulator and a knob for the lights and charging control. Is the regulator a mod or something that works with along with the original electrical system? Any suggestions where to start troubleshooting the lack of charging in the system? Thanks!
