You are after 3 things with a filter:
1. It will stay intact and secured during the operational period.
2. It will trap particulate matter
3. It will allow bypass filtration if clogged.
You can pull up most any filter on the www and find out:
Mounting dimensions, threads and overall volume
Minimum filtration particle size trapped
Pressure release value of pop off valve.
Sometimes features are also added such as materials from which seals are made.
I just did a personal study of Fram mid priced, Wix and Delco. I took filters that all had been in-service in my p/u or my diesel tractor for at least a year. I dissected them looking for construction technique and integrity after having been in service for that period.
All were intact including the Fram that gets whacked for using a compostie paper for support members where others used metal. None of the paper support elements were distorted, nor were any of the glued joints defective.
On JD filters, JD doesn't make filters, nor bearings, nor belts, etc. They buy them from an approved manufacturer. Once you know the dimensions, filtration minimum, and popoff value you can shop for a replacement.
