Hiya, A bit of helpful theory.. The generator has two terminals. One is A (Armature)usually the bigger of the two, and feeds out the herbs generated. The other is the F (Field).(I hope I remembered those the right way around). Anyway the field is the controlling voltage fed back into the field winding. The regulator varies this current which varies the output from the Armature terminal, thus not overcharging the battery. Therefore, to test the generator you can disconnect the regulator totally and connect the Field and the Armature together. When you start the engine the generator will then be pumping out herbies as fast as the poor old dear is able. At this stage you could get an old motor (Wiper motor for example). Connect it to a battery which has a known polarity and note the direction of rotation. Then hook it up to the generator and note it's direction of rotation again. A comparison will tell you the generator's output polarity, and that it is indeed generating. It will not tell you how much the generator is outputting, only a voltmeter and ammeter will tell you that. Suffice it to say that if it does run a motor then it is mostly functional. You could also connect up a pair of headlights of the correct voltage and size and see if it will run them, and how bright they are. This will give some indication of it's overall performance. One small thing, you may need to just touch a voltage onto the terminals to get it to excite. Generally this is not needed as the residual magnetism does the needful. Good Luck
