I am not familiar with any of the armor newer than the M60A1 Tank, but I would guess from the picture showing a man in the turret in what appears to be the Tank Commander's Cupola that he is not the driver. All of the earlier Tanks and Self Propelled Howitzers had the driver located in the front of the main hull not up in the turret except for the M88 Tank Recovery Vehicle. The M88 has its driver and TC hatch located side by side in the top front of the vehicle. I wonder if those are .50 cal ammo cans hung on the rear sides of the turret or maybe replaceable modular armor, or? In the late 1960's at the 225th HEMCO at FT Sill, OK, we hauled SP Howitzers and Tanks from main post to west range with 10T 3 axle tractors and a drop center flatbed with 2 or 3 axles. This transporter looks much better equipped to deal with their 60T load than ours were to deal with their 52T load. Our 10T tractors were powered with a 568cid Leroi gas engine in front of a 10 speed twin stick crash box transmission. Not too much power but loud, sounded like a fuel dragster going through main post when it was loaded I was told. We never hauled off post, so we were never scaled or inspected by the DOT, but I don't think any active duty military units are even when they are on public roads??
