Mel you are correct. The drivers position is in the hull. The guy sticking out the top is the tank commander when that position is behind the .50 cal. The loaders hatch is beside it and mounts a M240 7.62. Mel the M60A1 gave way to the M60A1 RISE (Reliability Imporved Selected Equipment). That was improvements to the air intake/filter system and a gun stablization system that allow the tank to fire on the move rather than the short halt an imporved search light and ditched the M63 or 219 7.62 COAX machince gun in favor of the M240. It's final upgrade was the M60A3 that included a lazer range finder, computerizes fire control system and thermal sights. The ole search light was gone. The M60A3 was repalced by the M1/M1IP/M1A1 depending on how early or late a unit was converted.
