I"m putting together an irrigation pump using an engine out of a 1993 Dodge Ram 250 truck, with Cummins diesel engine. I"ve got everything put together now and mostly wired, except for the alternator, which is externally regulated by the Body Control Module. I"m searching for an alternator that would be almost a direct replacement and easy to get so I don"t have to ding around to make something work if it should ever fail. The rebuilders want to sell me a new but modified alternator for about $400, but then I"m back to having to ding with it to make it all work, not to mention expensive.
