John sounds like you are hearing the hydraulic valve lifters pumping back up. If so it ran a little rough and smoothed out as the noise went away. I have mixed synthetic with petroleum based oil and had no problems. Not in a BB chevy but in a high reving honda with mileage over 250K and still doesn't burn oil. Changing to synthetic should have also resulted in some oil leaks as that stuff finds every loose spot. Synthetic is pretty pricy and I have experimented with longer intervals between oil changes. Started at every 2K changed to synthetic and pushed to 6K then to 8K with filter change at 4K and found the car started using oil at 6K, quart every 1K. So now I'm back to 6K with a filter change at 3K and the oil consumption is back at zero. So let us know if that click and clack come back.
