: I hit a stump with my bushhog and the backlash took out several gears in the transmission. I've just got it back together and the transmission seems to whine louder than it used to. I am pretty sure this is due to the different wear patterns of the gears that I used. I had to use a new cluster gear and the rest are used gears from three different transmissions. Have any of you had any experience using used gears in a transmission? Is it likely to get better or worse? I would have liked to use all new gears but unfortunatly they don't make all of them anymore. Any information or insight would be appreciated. Thanks, RT Keep in mind that the 1010 was essentially the 430 with a 4-cyl engine. There were some long-term reliability concerns with the engine, but from the clutch back it was a decent design, used in the 40/420/430/440 series machines. These gearboxes and final drives require 90w gear lube, not 303-style hydraulic oil. There is no oil pump in there, other than the oil clinging to the gear teeth. The 303 oil is too light to have enough of it pulled up by the teeth for proper lubrication. If you're using light oil, that would account for noise. Additionally, using gear parts from several gearboxes will result in mis-matched wear alignment between the teeth. This condition will correct itself with use, and the noise will lessen over time. Make sure to change the lube a couple of times a year into a clean drain pan. This will allow you to inspect for larger bits of metal, indicating a problem. There will be some very fine metal flakes in the drained lube, which indicate the wearing-in of the tooth surfaces. This should diminish over time. As long as you don't have any clunking sounds, put in the correct lube and continue using the machine!
