I don't especially trust any of the studies done... because they're all done by one special interest or another in an attempt to justify their cause. What I do think is this... if you're talking about energy in vs energy out you need to plan on accounting for all of the energy used in mining the iron to make the steel that goes into the equipment... the energy entrapped in the fertilizer production... transportation, field losses, etc. The only input is the sun's energy... and that is a pretty rough estimate. The bottom line is that the input from the sun has to make up for ALL of the efficiency losses in the system from one end to the other. As far as the DDG issue is concerned... there is recovery there in that you gain some usage from that product as feed... but when you saturate that market, then it's a waste product, pure and simple. In removing that from the equation I suspect that you'd have a fairly large negative number in the energy calculation. The fact that studies exist with numbers to support both stances in and of itself suggests that the real number is pretty close to zero on a good day.
