I don"t think it"s so much someone pulling a prank as it is just people not paying attention to what they are doing. I think what happens is that someone prepays and then just locks the nozzle in and lets the pump do all the work. Once the amount is reached and the pumps shuts off they just rehang the nozzle, never giving the fact that they locked it in a second thought. Dealing with the high flow diesel pumps I"ve seen this happen on many occasions when the last trucker was in a hurry. Personally I always insure the nozzle is in the tank before ever turning the pump on so there is absolutely no way this can happen, be it with a gas or diesel pump.
