18F N. of Dallas. Glaze ice all over everything. You can't stand up on the road out front. Last night some idiot thought he was going somewhere just to stop trying to climb the hill out front. Truck is still this am at 10 am. Guess he walked back home. Looks like Tue. before we can get out if the weather man is telling the truth.
Last storm like this was in 1999 and prior to that 1983. We get ice when the avg. temp falls below freezing here with an incoming wet storm, seldom just snow. 1/4" of sleet can shut the whole area big time.
Small branches, about the size of a yellow pencil are about 1" wide with their ice covering and numerous trees have real serious damage, especially the Hackberries which put out very long branches. Glad the limbs didn't fall on anything.
The two geese are hanging in there They are on the lee side of the dam to the W pool which is frozen. The E pool is larger, gets more wind and is still open. They are all bundled up and using their "goose down" to full advantage.
I was going to get more gas for the APU before the storm but figured I had enough. Next time I will be more diligent. I run it off and on to keep the frige cold and to power things like the coffee pot, today the computer, and heater for the bathroom....took a bath today. Feels great.
Got plenty of dry oak and the wood stove is doing the trick; some of the best money I ever spent. Lights been out since night B4 last when the ice storm hit and probably will be out till Mon or Tue when the ice melts off the roads.
Called one of the repair guys we know and he said lines were down all over the county. Said outside crews were coming in to help. With the glaze ice roads and caked snow/ice off road, I don't see how they get anything done.
I REALLY TAKE MY HAT OFF TO THESE POWER COMPANY LINEMEN. THEY COME OUT IN THE WORST WEATHER AND RISK THEIR LIVES SO THAT WE CAN HAVE OUR PLEASURES IN LIFE. THANKS TO YOU GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good thing is that the water is still on. About 3 power companies service this area and our FHA financed water system has 3 wells NOW, luckily all on different servers. Seems my power company is first out and last on. Back in the '83 storm we had only one and we were on the same feed. Feed went down and no nothing.
Animals are doing well. Hay is holding up, chipped ice this morning on the water trough as with power out the elect heater is inop.. Got plenty of feed. Squirrels, birds, and geese are eating away.
On the dog, I fixed her a hot supper and breakfast. She gets prem. canned with added water; dry stuff is still free choice and I keep the water drinkable. She is doing fine. Limbs on her tree are sagging but none broke. Great. Any supplement heat for her of an electrical nature would have been an exercise in futility.
I know you guys up North laugh at us down here but having it on a regular basis forces you to be prepared for it. Down here it's so seldom about the only prep is government enties have sand trucks and sand the heavily traffic areas, especially bridges and overpasses. Once you get off them you just have to wait it out.
This is a feather in the cap for the "Old Farmer's Almanac" as I bought one of their paper backs this year and they said we would have colder and wetter than normal weather. Right on. Intellicast and others might learn something from them.
