Alot will depend on what you're powering the 5 footer with. Since I don't know
what kind of tractor will be in front of it, all I can do is be general.

For 3 acres, assuming you're on some kind of budget, I'd go with the cheaper mower which
"tastes" and feels like a reasonably decent piece of equipment. Thickness of its case is important to me and I like some weight. Unless you're loaded and cost isn't a consideration, the go-in price for a brand new Woods is difficult to justify for 3 acres.
Woods ARE heavy pieces of equipment... be sure you've got enough tractor and lift in front of the mower.

Trust your gut and instincts. One thing is for sure though... you'll need to protect it from the weather. The elements are much harder on equipment than USING them will ever be. I had a nice bush hog deteriorate in 5 years sitting outside... put a new one in
a covered shed and it's not showing any wear at all cutting 10 acres every two weeks for the last 3 years.

: I plan on buying a 5' PTO-driven finishing mower in the next week.

: I have considered buying a new name brand (Land Pride, Woods, and so on), used name brand (if I can find them), or a new cheaper model from Central Tractor.

: Does anyone have opinions about whether the name brands are worth the extra money? How about the chances I would take on a used model? I have been getting prices around $1400 for new name brand, around $800 for used name brand, and the Central tractor model is on sale for $899.

: I will be mowing around 3 acres on a regular basis.

: Thanks!

Today's Featured Article - Old Time Threshing - by Anthony West. A lovely harvest evening late September 1947, I was a school boy, like all school boys I loved harvest time. The golden corn ripens well and early, the stoking, stacking,.... the drawing in with the tractors and trailers and a few buck rakes thrown in, and possibly a heavy horse. It would be a great day for the collies and the terrier dogs, rats and mice would be at the bottom of the stacks so the dogs, would have a busy time hunting and killing, all the corn was gathered and ricked in what we c ...
