Have you had the problem your entire life or just when you got older? Any sign of Reynaud's disease?
I ask because I work outside every winter often in temps below zero. Never had a problem until I hit my mid 50s. Now I'm in my 60s and every winter my hands get deep cracks all over. They become a mass of open cuts that won't heal unless I just stop working for a while. When spring comes - they are fine.
I discovered something this year that I cannot explain. For the first winter in 40 years - I'm not heating with wood. I'm in northern Michigan and working outside every day on an old house I'm fixing up. Temps have been 5-15 degrees F most every day for a month and a few were 5 below. My hands are fine. NO cracking at all! So I'm wondering what change in my life has caused this? I can note two changes in my winter lifestyle here. No firewood handling and no constantly greasy hands. When I'm home in NY during the winter I work inside a shop turning wrenches on tractors and trucks. Here in Michigan I'm working on a house - outdoors most of the time.
