: Mr. King and Mr. Hard--Thanks you for your good information. I still have a question. Across the battery at 1500 rpm my meter reads 6.24 volts. Is that sufficient enough to rule out the generator because when I take a voltage reading on the generator it shows between 1.64 and 1.65 output. does this indicate the voltage regulator in your opinion? Thanks so much...Jerry Coleman As has been pointed out here before, there are two important voltages to measure. 1 at the battery, enigine stopped, and 1 at the battery engine at a high idle. 2 should be 2-3 volts higher than 1. If your readings are accurate as you have posted then your generator is not functioning, you are just reading the battery voltage. To rule out the regulator, connect the two live terminals of the generator together and hook them straight to the battery with the engine running. This will make the generator produce maximum output, so don't leave it too long. In this mode you should not only be able to measure the voltage increase at the battery (Clip your multimeter onto the battery terminals ), but you should also get a healthy spark when you touch the terminals on (Current). Do this away from the battery though as the charging process produces gases which are explosive. Also, don't be tempted to try this with an alternator as you will likely destroy the diodes or the built in regulator. Good luck.
