YES weld fumes can make you sick. It is not only galvanized stuff that is dangerous. The is small amounts of other metals in steel. They can turn into gaseous fumes when welding them.
Read about a guy that just cleaned some metal up with carburetor cleaner. He then welded the steel and the fumes from the residue put him into the hospital and caused long term eye trouble. Some type of tunnel vision.
I love to weld and welding can be a good paying job but I also know a lot of old welders with lung problems.
