The fumes depend on just what base metal you are welding, and what it is coated with including paint. Some materials are radically bad titanium and chrome containing metals. Welding rod fluxes are also guilty with Rutile (Titanium containing), calcium fluoride, cellulose, and iron powder, are common.
Galvanizing (Zink) is an issue and produces the symptoms you have but the good news is that your body will remove the extra zink and not be permanently affected. (assuming you are healthy) It might take two or 3 weeks to recover, but it is not going to permanently do heavy metal damage. Don't subject your self to galvanized metal welding fumes (or any other) but if you were welding Zinc coated pipe you will get better. Read up on it. Jim
