I worked maintenance at a hot dip galvanizing plant years ago that had a production bonus setup in place. When we met, and exceeded production goals, and got the max bonus for any length of time, they raised the amount of production needed to get the max bonus. That happened three times in the year and a half I worked there.
To make matters worse, each individual department was rated, and received their bonuses, separately.... but the maintenance department was rated as a percentage of the plant as a whole. That would have been OK, if we actually worked on something in the intake or shipping department, where 90% of the mistakes were made. As a result if we kept all of the plants equipment working and the 'plant' met, or exceeded the set tonnage of material, by rights we should have received the same bonus they did. Thing is if someone in the intake or shipping department broke an item, or screwed up somehow, it dropped their bonus dramatically. The end result was that even though we, the maintenance department, kept the plant at near 100% operational status (and they got their max bonus), we might wind up getting a 20% bonus because that's what the 'plant average' was because someone messed up an item we had no ability to repair, nor even any responsibility to do so.
We threatened one time to cut back on our work and let them see exactly what happened when we only kept the plant up 20% of the time like we were getting the incentive to do. Needless to say it would have done absolutely no good as mgmt. simply didn't care about anyone...the very reason the place had such a high rate of turnover...
