The Great Marianas Turkey Shoot. Yesterday was the first day of fighting in the 1944 Battle of the Philippine Sea. It was the last pure carrier battle and also the largest, 15 US carriers faced 9 Japanese ships. The next time Japanese and American carriers faced each other in October the Japanese naval air force was but a shell compared to its June force. The Japanese sought to fight a stand off battle and nearly succeeded. Their air groups were devastated. The next day they refueled intending to renew the fight on the 21 but the Americans found them late in the day and sent an air strike forcing the Japanese to withdraw. Two of their best carriers, Taiho and Shokaku were lost to submarine attack on the 19 while Hiyo was sunk in the US attack on the 20th. There was frustration among the American carrier admirals in the failure to bag the entire carrier force. It is a controversy which will last for as long as the battle is remembered.
