On a JD 630 , I had the generator rebuilt and a new voltage regulator installed. Yes its 12v pos ground and I set the polarity. When you start the tractor and then bring up the rpm"s it charges just fine until it sences a fully charged battery and stops charging never to charge again. Until you shut down an restart again. It shows 2-3 negative amps on the gauge when running in this mode. I called the shop that did the rebuild and they said it was the battery. I have had 3 different batterys in the tractor with the same results. To me it needs a sensitivity adjustment. Any help will make me happy.
