- I know this because way back - I was around 18, dating a girl. One day we went to visit her uncle. This uncle had a nice yellow lab - big happy puppy.
They went into the house and I was sitting on the deck - and the dog came running over to me - all excited tail wagging a mile a minute - big puppy smile...
She was full of energy, and started to jump up against my leg just as I reached down to pat her head, equally happy to play with her...
As her head came up - my finger went RIGHT into her eye! Really hard. She yelped LOUDLY and laid down on her back whimpering submissively like I had done it on purpose. I tried consoling her, but the damage was done.
Half a minute later the girl and her uncle came back out talking away - the dog got up, and the opportunity to explain the eye poke just kinda passed, and I never said anything. (I was 18 - young, stupid and socially awkward).
The dog didn't want to play much after that - and always turned her head whenever I went near her.
Years later I ran into the uncle who still had the dog, he was walking her on a leash. I went up to him, said hello, and noticed the dog backed away and stood behind him with her face hidden from me.
He explained that the dog's always been afraid of strangers like that. What was funny was then he kept encouraging her, coaxing her 'come on Sade, say hello' - telling her "You remember Jon - you don't have to be afraid of HIM" !!!
Man I felt sooo bad. Poor dog.
Little did he know I was the one that taught her to fear strangers!
Even though I had done a lot of maturing by that time, I still couldn't bring myself to explain what had happened - by that time I felt too stupid about not explaining it the first time.
