Last Saturday, the SIL called from the local junk yard and told me there was a JD chuck wagon that had come in earlier in the day. Said it looked to be in decent shape and the scrap yard owner was willing to sell it for $400. So, I told to bring it home. It was old, but not really bad, and had nice heavy Deere gear under it, no roof or side extensions. But well worth $400.
I was out mowing pasture today and my phone rang- it was Scotty. Or, his phone, anyway. Pennsyltucky State Trooper, on Scotty's phone.
I thought he had had an accident or something, but he started asking questions about the wagon and where it was. Turns out a kid had stolen it from the barn it was stored in and driven it across a corn field 1/4 mile and up to the scrap yard and sold it to them for $300- scrap price. My best guess is that he is now in the York County Graybar. The scrapper is going to give us the money we're out and my guess is the guy they grabbed is gonna do some real time this time. Cop mentioned he was rather well known and is a "frequent flyer"......
The owner happens to be the uncle and brother aaf a few close friends. He picked the wagon up late this afternoon, no worse for the wear. We both hope they hang the little bustard.....
