My wife and I were to meet one her brothers and his wife at our local VFW for dinner last evening. They live 50 miles away.
They were also an hour late. The reason? They had to pick their grandson, Patrick, up from work and drop him off at a gym where he works out.
Uh, Patrick is 28 years old, married, has a three year old daughter, and refuses to learn to drive a car. So, his grandparents shuttle him back and forth to work and wherever else he needs to go with no compensation. I have no idea what his wife does, or if she can drive. Also, the kid's parents live not that far away. I suspect they've already washed their hands of the situation. I'll admit, in the kid's favor, he has held the same steady job since he graduated from high school.
All my BIL and his wife are doing is enabling the kid. As long as he gets free taxi service, he'll take advantage of it. If I were my BIL, I think I'd make a simple two sentence speech. "Taxi service ends at midnight, August 31. After that, you're on your own".
