: I'm considering a pump to fill tanks for watering vegatables. : It would draw water from the pond to a trailer on the bank about 6 : feet above. It needs to operate from a 540 pto or have its own engine. : The CT catalog shows PTO driven "Hypro belt-driven pump" and "Ace : centrifugal pump" for $319.99. Several catalogs show 3.5HP : engine/pumps for $200-$220 and some are described as "self-priming". : It might be nice to have the PTO driven pump so there's not another : engine to maintain. : QUESTIONS: : 1. Does anybody know if the PTO pumps or engine/pumps would be more : suitable? : 2. Are there any priming considerations, and will pumps not identified : as self-priming require a foot valve or something? We pump out relatives swimming pool every year which is really full of gross green stuff so it can be refilled with good water. We only have to lift the water about 4 feet because it is an above ground pool. My advice would be to use a foot valve no matter what, six foot lift is a lot of suction and the pumps valves don't always hold well enough to get you going and if you stop you lose all your prime. Use some kind of screen and probably a float to hold the intake at the right level to get the best water without air. Centrifugal pumps move a lot of water and can take some junk but too much will plug the spinner and cut down capacity to nothing after awhile. Type of pump is your choice depending on money and tractors available. There are engine pumps that use maifold engine vacuum to prime the pump but I think they cost a lot more. If you have a foot valve and a way to add water through a valve at the pump you should be OK. Make sure your intake hose is the type that won't collapse and the connections don't let air in. Good luck.
