I agree with others. Don't pay him the $300 unless he can show you where it says that in the contract you signed.

Just tell him you don't remember this fee and ask him to show you. No need to be rude. If he can't verify to your satiisfaction, simply decline to pay. If he can verify you agreed, say OOps, and cut him a check.
