: : I have a Ford NAA that has problems with the hyd.
: : system when it gets hot. Has the hy-trol valve pump
: : which I think is the vane type. Looses all lift when
: : the tractor is worked hard as in brushhoging thick
: : vegation. Could the problem be the relief valve, or
: : worn out hyd. fluid? Or would the problem lie in the pump,
: : such as weak seals? There are no noticeable leaks anywhere
: : around the system. Would like any thoughts before I
: : go to the expense or having the pump rebuilt. One last thing,
: : if the pump needs rebuilt, how much money should I
: : expect it to cost? Thanks to all who reply!

:
: It is difficult to say without watching it operate but I doubt it is worn out hydraulic fluid. I've seen the Hy-Trol valve on tractors with both the vane- and piston-type pumps. The vane pump was found on models through ROUGHLY the first half of '53 when the piston pumps took over. Many vane pumps were replaced by piston pumps as the standard replacement part was the piston pump.

: If I were you, I'd start by replacing the pressure relief valve and all of the seals in the lift cylinder and draft control mechanism as they are much cheaper than pumps to replace or rebuild though not necessarily easier. We've replaced the seals several times and the valve once on our '53 but have yet to do anything to the pump.
: The I&T shop manual helps a lot in dianosing the problem and helping you through the fix the first time. Good luck.

Just to throw in my two cents worth. Might check and make sure that you have at least 80 weight mineral oil in the hydraulics and not current hy-trans fliud.

Hi, Matt, hope you have had more rain than we have had.

Today's Featured Article - Third Brush Generators - by Chris Pratt. While I love straightening sheet metal, cleaning, and painting old tractors, I use every excuse to avoid working on the on the electrics. I find the whole process sheer mystery. I have picked up and attempted to read every auto and farm electrics book with no improvement in the situation. They all seem to start with a chapter entitled "Theory of Electricity". After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point ... [Read Article]
