I know $14/hour seems good to many, but to me that isn't nearly enough to feed myself, 3 kids and my wife. It is better than $9/hour though, so for those that make less it's still a good jump. I make a good deal more than that and my wife just quit her job before having our 3rd child. Still seeing how it's gonna go, but I'm hoping she can stay home for a while with this one, instead of making grandma and grandpa watch the kids while we both work our butts off to provide for them and don't get to watch them grow up ourselves. We've already missed the first 4 years with my oldest, and 2 years with our second.
A good machinist (takes a few years to get there) can make well over $20/hour, and seasoned vets can make over $30. I'm not sure what the shop I work for starts out high school kids but they've got 7 or 8 right now going through a program, and lots of them seem to stay over the years.
It's a good career and the shop I'm at is hiring and growing at a good pace, and has been for several years from what I've seen on the outside before I was hired in July. It's a very stable company with many very large, very stable and growing customers.
Personally, I feel much more secure now than I did 5 years ago.
