Hey all,
So I'm having some troubles with my 1986 F-250 with diesel engine. This would have originally had a 6.9 IH, but was swapped to a 7.3 a few years back when the 6.9 died on me (If I stopped for fuel it was due for at least a quart of oil.. she was tired, and she finally lost a cylinder).
I did the swap approx. 20k ago (just my farm truck.. not my daily driver). Over the summer it developed a smoking issue.. at first it seemed to only smoke more than "normal" once in a blue moon. I took a short cell phone video as it slowly got worse and showed it to my diesel repair facility, and I was advised to have injectors checked.. I did, and all were cleaned/adjusted/reworked as necessary.
The smoke is a grayish color, and does not smell as it used to, has a more raw fuel smell to it than I recall it having before the issue begun (not that I like to inhale the exhaust, but have noticed as I walk past the truck while running).
Smokes worse on cold start (no matter air temperature, looks to smoke just as bad at 70, 50, or 20 degree air temp), and will run horribly first couple minutes (but pretty well always has).
No excessive oil consumption (has used 1-2 qts between the 5-6000k service ever since this engine was installed).
Does not appear to be making oil, or to be losing coolant.
Generally runs smoothly, but has a intermittent miss (almost like a sticking injector), and when it "misses" it smokes worse. Engine does not have a "shake" like the 6.9 had with it's dead cylinder.
No loss of power that I notice.
No abnormal noises that I notice.
Fuel filters have approx. 400 miles on them (changed during fall harvest). Has Aux. spin-on water separator/filter, as well as the factory unit.
The "return line check valve" has been changed in the past, and was checked for plugging recently, as was the return line (can easily blow through it).
No visible fuel leaks, ALL return lines, fittings, o-rings were changed late summer (one return tee cracked, so I did them all to save frustration in the future). WAS SMOKING BEFORE return line replacement.
Frequently use either Lucas fuel additive, or Stanadyne fuel additive.. Usually one or the other every 3 or 4 fill-ups.
I have not pulled a compression check yet, as I can't fit the truck into my shop, and it's chilly in Michigan.
Is it likely that I have a injector pump issue? The engine came with a reman pump still in the box when I bought it. Guy I purchased it from claimed the previous owner said the IP was bad, but he drove it a few thousand miles before it was wrecked, and as I said, I've put nearly 20k on it since I put it in my truck.
Sorry to be long winded, wanted to give as much info as possible in hopes of getting sent in a good direction.

Today's Featured Article - Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
