What makes you think the plant would ALLOW the union to continue to work with no contract? Do you really think they would go for that? Around here, its not all that common to have a work continuation clause in the contract and when its there, BOTH sides have to agree (and just getting that agreement can take a few days to a week). My money says no way that the plant would go for that. Telling the union they should just lay low really dont work in a situation like that.
Bottom line, IMHO, the workers are in a tough spot and it will likely be a time that they have to give "concessions" back to the plant. The plant will be thinking (weather its real or imagined) that now is a take back time after previous years of greedy contracts by the union.
