David, The more complicated the system the higher the odds of complications are. Small problems are multiplied in these systems. They have to be just about perfect to work so any small thing goes wrong and the whole thing does not work.
I am assuming the injectors will not work at all when they stick closed??? So what does this do to the performance of the engine??? I know you say that they injection system is more efficient when it is working correctly but what about when it is not??? While a carbureted system is never perfect it will function at some level even when it has issues.
I have 20 year old tractors that will still work if a pressure sensor fails. The operator just has to be observant until we can fix it. My son's newer tractors will not even move let alone run if a sensor fails. This is not progress in my book. You make the system more prone to small failures and then make it to where small failures shut the whole system down. That is the true meaning of "Catch 22" to me.
