I am sitting here after dinner with the windows open listening to the frogs croak. And the generator run!
I got done with chores and showered to be ready to start dinner. The taco meat was about half done when the power started to slowly dim. Typical. It usually does it on only one leg, but every farm light I can see is out, so it is everything. I looked at the power company website and there are a few thousand spread out in the area with no power.
I fired up the diesel unit and switched over. Now I am sitting here trying to decide whether to leave it run for the night or shut it down. We had 3 inches of rain last night and I worry about the sump pump. This humidity isn't kind to all of the fridges and deep freezers, either. I guess she runs. It is all manual switch over, so I can only tell if we have power by looking for yard lights in the distance. Too bad those trees are leaved out!
I thank the good Lord for that generator about 5 times a year. This is one.

But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
