The place I work for deals mostly in pallets but we do haul some TV's and other large boxes UPS will not take.
If I show up and the box is in good shape; or the shrink wrap in in tact on the pallet; you have 2 choices.
Sign for it or refuse it.
You will not be allowed to open the box and check for concealed damage.
Concealed damage is on the shipper.
Either they did not pack it well enough; or it was broken when we picked it up.

Now if you want to sign for it and then open it that is OK.
I will make a note on the bill that you found concealed damage to where you have some recourse with the shipper.

If I show up with something that is clearly carrier damaged but you did not notice it while I was there and we note in on the bill and give you a claim #.
Tough luck. Once I leave the carrier will say you dropped in and caused the damage.

Just because you notice damage at delivery and get a claim # does not guaranty they will honor the claim. The pickup driver may have noted box crushed or such at the time of pickup.

If you do everything correctly; get a claim #; and file a claim. We could care less what is in the box.
We pay for the item up to XX per pound. If the cost over XX per pound you should have bought extra insurance. I forget what XX is equal to but can tell you it is less than a $1.00 per pound; I want to say it is even less than $0.50 per pound.
So when you get your $1200 TV that weighs 65 pounds and it is damaged you can expect to get less than $65 for you broken TV unless you bought extra insurance.
