Never really thought about it, but it seems more often than not that aircraft violate it, flying at low altitude, private and municipal, police, ARNG. One fixed wing buzzed my roof top so low, with a low cloud ceiling directly towards a known elevation 300' higher about 800 yds away, he was lucky to clear the trees as I watched, then went to the airport he took off from to make a complaint. I don't particularly appreciate aircraft that close to my home. State police had some fiasco with someone in custody escaping, 3 years back, they called in one of their Bell 407 or 430's and it was hovering just above the trees at night, for 2 hours with us as ground zero, was just hoping they did not strike a rotor on any branches or have a problem, way too close to the ground to have any time to deal with a problem, they have one crash that I know of in recent times.
That part of it I always wondered, who gets to violate the 500' threshold? 2 years in a row they circle my house in July, checking my small hill top vegetable garden, much lower than 500'. I think it was clusters of peonies to the south of the garden, post bloom, under the nearby apricot tree. It finally dawned on me as those could look very similar to what they are looking for from their view. Its just that they've only been there for 30 years. They flew low, slow and in view of the garden saturday, but no circle around this year, well so far LOL ! Maybe I'll leave a sign in view: Peonies ! LOL !
In NYC, specifically Manhattan, air rights are quite valuable, for obvious reasons. I hired and worked with one old surveying outfit (link below) and it was quite interesting speaking with Andrew, the owner, about old surveys and lots of historical things about the city. They have some really old maps and information on hand. One of them was rooting out mistakes and making claims on tiny triangles or slivers of land, own the land, you may have valuable air rights to sell to an developer. I don't know of any specific cases, and there's a lot more to it, but it was possible.

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
