My wife called me one day after I'd arrived at work -- said that a grey helicopter was hovering at treetop height in my side yard. She could not see any identifying marks on it. I called the State Police, Prosecutors office, and others to see if it was one of theirs; all denied having anything to do with it.
After that, I looked up the relevant regulations and based on my research, it appears that there is no legally-defined minimum altitude for helicopters. The only caveat is that they are not permitted to fly in a harassing or threatening manner.
A day later, there was news of an arrest nearby (5 miles to the northwest) involving 40 pounds of pot in the trunk of a car... I don't think it's much of an assumption to say that the chopper was probably related to that. Still, I don't appreciate choppers buzzing my house.
If a helicopter ever does this when I'm home, I'll be sure to get video footage and speak with the registered owner.
